RELOCATION PROGRAM

Now that you’re here, let’s have a real conversation

At IHS, we help people make informed decisions about their future—whether that means staying in Hawaiʻi or reconnecting with support systems on the mainland. Our Return-to-Home Relocation Program assists individuals who want to return to a place of meaningful support, providing document replacement, airfare assistance, ground transportation, and travel essentials. For those who choose to stay, we’re here to help you understand what it truly takes to build a life in these islands.

RESPECT FOR ʻĀINA AND CULTURE

We welcome you to Hawaiʻi, but the flip side of Aloha is Kuleana: personal responsibility. Here, respect must be given first. Everyone contributes to the community’s well-being. With limited island resources, there’s no room for those who only take. Hawaiʻi was a sovereign kingdom. ʻĀina (the land) is sacred. Success means learning local ways and honoring sacred spaces. Don’t litter. Don’t waste resources. Don’t just look for what these islands can give you. Without a “giving back” mindset, you’ll remain an outsider.

THE TRUE COST OF “PARADISE”

The average market rent for a studio is $1,800+ per month. Food costs are 30-50% higher than on the mainland. Bus routes are limited and a monthly pass costs $80. In need of a medical specialist? Expect months-long waits. Do you want homeless services? Resources are tight and locals are prioritized. Plan to sleep on sidewalks? That’s illegal and you’ll be fined. Hawaiʻi is beautiful but ask yourself honestly: where would you truly thrive?  *2024 HUD PIT Count excludes hospitals, jails, couch surfing.
