We need you as a volunteer!

Volunteers are the lifeblood of our organization. From helping in the administrative office to on-the-job shadowing in the field, there are many ways to donate your time and talents.

Your skills and know-how can help us serve more of our community in need. Opportunities are available in the medical clinic, administrative office, accounting, social work, children’s program, and more, see below for opportunity descriptions, including suggested time commitments:

Meal Service

Three meals per day are prepared at our Sumner Men’s Shelter and served across our 10-shelter network. Help prepare and serve meals at the men’s shelter. This volunteer position is great for individuals or groups, as each shift accommodates up to 5 volunteers. Shifts are available 3 meals per day, 7 days per week. Individuals 12 years of age or older can serve in this role, but any volunteer under the age of 18 must be accompanied by an adult.

Donation Sorting

The donation center at the Kaaahi Women’s and Family shelter receives daily donations of clothing, hygiene products, household items, and more. Help sort these donations so shelter guests and operations can access what they need when they need it.

This volunteer position is great for individuals or groups; each shift accommodates up to 5 volunteers. Shifts are available during the week and one Saturday per month. Individuals 12 years of age or older can serve in this role, but any volunteer under the age of 18 must be accompanied by an adult.

Health Clinic

This is the perfect position for a medical or nursing student looking to complete in-service hours. Our health clinic is open 6 days per week at our Sumner Men’s Shelter. Volunteers must commit to a minimum of one 4-hour shift per week for a minimum of 3 months. Shifts are from 8am-12pm, Monday through Friday, Friday 12-4pm, and Saturdays 8am-12pm or 11am-3pm. The clinic is closed on Sundays.

Current Need: Tuesday, Wednesday, and Friday mornings: 8am to noon.  Tuesday and Friday afternoons: 12-4pm.

Administrative / Office Support

With departments ranging from housing to finance to medical billing, we always have a need for people to support with data entry, filing, and general office tasks. Administrative volunteers are asked to commit to a minimum of one 4 hour shift per week. Administrative volunteer shifts are available Monday-Friday, 8am-5pm, depending on your availability and the needs of the department. Limited remote positions are available after an in-office onboarding process.

Employment Program

Our employment program is often looking for professional volunteers to help guests determine the best job prospects for their particular backgrounds, create resumes, and prepare for job interviews. Limited remote positions are available after an in-office onboarding process.

Guest Services

Our shelters are always looking for cheerful volunteers to serve at the front desk or in our dormitories to greet guests, answer phones, and help with any guest needs that arise. Volunteers are encouraged to commit at least 2-3 hours per week to these positions.

Guest Companions at Medical Respite Homes

Volunteers at the Tutu Bert’s Medical Respite homes help homeless individuals who are exiting the hospital by providing companionship and fellowship. Volunteers visit with guests to prepare and serve meals, play music, or play games with the guests while they are predominantly homebound. Daytime shifts are available, along with evening and weekend shifts.

Children's Program

On an as-needed basis, volunteers may support the children’s program as tutors, field trip chaperones, or to assist the children with onsite activities. *Volunteers are asked to commit a minimum of two months.

Special Skills Positions

If you have a special skill or vocation, please let us know. We love to have skilled volunteers available to support our clients. We see volunteer lawyers, hair stylists, counselors, exercise instructors, and many more who offer services in ways that can be of benefit to our clients. Let us know what special skills you bring and we’ll look for a match with our needs!

Internship

Kahauiki Village Internship (Children’s Program; Community Relations; Case Management). Unpaid Internship. 10 to 15 hours per week for three months (around 100 hours total). If interested, email: volunteer@ihshawaii.org. Or fill out the form below.

Host a Drive

With the help of your network, collect food items for our kitchen, household items for clients recently placed in permanent homes, or general goods to help our shelter operations staff.
