From the comfort of your home to group and individual settings, our employment services volunteers support our clients with life skills and access to jobs and housing.


Volunteer Opportunity #1: Job Coaches

Schedule:

  • Tuesdays & Thursdays 10:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m.

Location:

Volunteer’s Role:

  • Coaches meet with motivated homeless clients to mentor our clients by working one on one with them through the process of finding a job and ultimately back into permanent housing.
  • Coaches develop an understanding of the many homeless populations, their challenges, and barriers to obtain jobs.  At the same time, through mentorship, volunteers help clients remove barriers and achieve employment goals.

Additional Requests / Commitment:

  • We ask volunteers to commit to one or more shifts per week for at least a three month commitment so they’ll have an opportunity to get to know the clients to best serve their needs.
  • You will work alongside our staff to be shown and trained how to help our clients so you will be successful in this position.  This also includes individual mentoring and shadowing our staff for the first month or two to ensure job coaches have a positive experience and are successful with mentoring homeless clients.
  • We are a qualified college certification program to sign off on community service hours and practicum hours for students seeking scholarships and graduation requirements.
  • We ask volunteers have experience creating a resume, applying for a job and interviewing and have the ability to share these experiences.  Some basic computer knowledge required.
  • IHS welcomes retired professionals interested in passing down their knowledge, experiences, and values to benefit a future workforce.

Volunteer Opportunity #2: Job Readiness Class Aide

Schedule:

  • Wednesdays 9:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m.

Location:

Volunteer’s Role:

  • Assist our team and job readiness class instructors with helping homeless prepare for the workforce in a group setting.
  • Attendees take part in two sessions with the first focused on gathering information for their resume and the second, focus on the interview process with business partners on site for actual job interviews and placement.
  • While you will start off slow and be trained with our staff, if you’re motivated and have the desire to, we will train you to be able to teach components of the class such as budgeting, mock interviews, soft skills, and communication skills to have more of an impact on our clients.

Additional Requests / Commitment:

  • We ask volunteers to commit to one shift per week for at least a three month commitment where you’ll be able to work with the whole spectrum of homeless clients who are motivated to find a job.
  • We are a qualified college certification program to sign off on community service hours and practicum hours for students seeking scholarships and graduation requirements.
  • We ask that volunteers have experience creating a resume, applying for a job and interviewing and have the ability to share these experiences.  Some basic computer knowledge is preferred but not required.

Volunteer Opportunity #3: Resume Builders

Schedule:

  • Any day and time according to your availability as you’re working remotely from the comfort of your home or office.

Volunteer’s Role:

  • From the comfort of your home, resume builders are assigned to help our clients build professional resumes, which will help them obtain a job and ultimately help qualify for housing.

Additional Requests / Commitment:

  • We ask volunteers for at least a three month commitment so they’ll have an opportunity to see and learn what we do and how it impacts those we reach.
  • We are a qualified college certification program to sign off on community service hours and practicum hours for students seeking scholarships and graduation requirements.
  • We ask volunteers to have experience creating a resume and some basic computer knowledge required for creating a resume.

Volunteer Opportunity #4: Employment Outreach

Schedule:

  • Days & Times vary based on the location you selected near and convenient for you.

Locations:

  • LEEWARD; Maili, Waianae, Kapolei, & Ewa Beach
  • CENTRAL/NORTH SHORE: Haleiwa, Mililani, Wahiawa, Waipahu, Aiea
  • WINDWARD: Kaneohe, Kailua, Waimanalo
  • SOUTHSIDE: Honolulu, Waikiki, Moiliili

Volunteer’s Role:

  • Join our Employment Services Team in the field by going to food banks and community centers across Oahu to engage potential clients in signing up for the Hele2Work.
  • Volunteers will be trained to conduct “intakes” and begin assessments on people across our community who are mainly at-risk of homelessness.  Additionally, volunteers will be trained to sell our services to help our community increase earning potential, stabilize housing, and develop financial literacy & life skills.

  • We ask volunteers for at least a three month commitment so they’ll have an opportunity to see and learn what we do and how it impacts those we reach.
  • We are a qualified college certification program to sign off on community service hours and practicum hours for students seeking scholarships and graduation requirements.
  • We ask volunteers to have friendly, compassionate, and outgoing personality with some understanding of the benefits and importance of having a job and how that leads to getting and keeping a home.
