We are in need of committed and compassionate clinical volunteers & nonclinical support volunteers to help our clients obtain stable health as part of their journey out of homelessness.

Volunteer Opportunity #1: Clinical Volunteers

Schedule:

  • Day shift, Monday Thru Friday, 7:30 a.m. – 2:00 p.m.
  • Afternoon shift, Monday Thru Thursday, 2:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m.

Location:

Volunteer's Role:

  • Assist IHS' Health Services staff and other volunteers with triage, treatment, and referring patients to their Primary Care Physician (PCP), Emergency Room, or other as necessary based on the needs of the patient to enable them to get into a stable health situation which will better allow them to get back on their feet.

Additional Requests / Commitment:

  • We are asking for compassionate volunteers who are licensed to practice in Hawaii to triage and treat patients according to standard protocols.  At your comfort level, you may be asked to prescribe medicines as necessary and assist patients with identifying and establish a PCP.  We want you to use your critical thinking and clinical judgment and experience while working directly with IHS health services staff and our patients.
  • We ask that volunteers have an eagerness and compassion to help support our staff as they help our clients who without this service may not otherwise receive any medical attention.
  • We ask that volunteers have an eagerness and compassion to help support our staff as they lead our guests who without this service may not otherwise receive any medical attention.   A three month commitment is requested.
  • We also perform outreach medicine with those who have an interest in this effort after they’ve completed their initial three month commitment.

Volunteer Opportunity #2: Nonclinical Support Volunteers

Schedule:

  • Day shift, Friday, 7:30 a.m. – 2:00 p.m.
  • Afternoon shift, Monday thru Thursday, 2:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m.

Location:

Volunteer's Role:

  • Assist IHS' Health Services staff and other volunteers with clerical support which may include scanning and uploading documents into EMR (Medical Records Program), answering the phones and directing calls appropriately, check in patient’s and remind them of appointments, assist with clinic administrative work which will allow the health service’s staff to be more attentive with those in their care, and assist with ongoing cleaning and closing procedures of the program.

Additional Requests / Commitment:

  • We are asking for volunteers who may not be licensed to practice in Hawaii to support those caring for the clients who visit us with clerical and office support.  This is typically not with direct patient interaction.  However, this is an excellent opportunity for students interested or new to the health services profession to get exposure to a clinic setting, a vulnerable population in Hawaii, and some of the medical issues of homeless individuals.
  • We are a qualified college certification program to sign off on community service hours and practicum hours for students seeking scholarships and graduation requirements.
  • We ask that volunteers who are at least 18 years of age have an eagerness and compassion to help support our staff as they work with our guests who without this service may not otherwise receive any medical attention.  With our compassionate care, patients have the opportunity to get their dignity back a well as to gain a stable and healthy condition so their better able to tackle the challenges they face every day.  While experience is preferred, it is not required.  We will work with you and train you on the duties you’ll be asked to.
