Meal Programs

Help our mission by “feeding the soul” of Hawaii’s most vulnerable people while also giving them the chance to recover and heal from homelessness.


Sponsor A Meal

Churches and private groups may sponsor the 300 meals per service (or 900 meals per day) at a cost of about $3.00 per meal.  If you would like to fully or partially sponsor a meal, please contact the Meal Program Manager, Ana Alualu at AnaA@ihshawaii.org or call 808-447-2904.


Volunteer Opportunity #1: Kitchen Helpers

Schedule:

  • Breakfast shift, Mon Thru Sun, 5:00 a.m. – 8:00 a.m.
  • Lunch Shift, Mon, Thru Sun, 9:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m.
  • Dinner Shift, Mon thru Sun, 5:30 p.m. – 7:30 p.m.
    • Shifts can be made to fit your particular schedule

Location:

Where IHS operates a DOH “Grade A” commercial kitchen that cooks and serves three meals a day, every day of the year.

Volunteer’s Role:

  • Assist IHS’ kitchen staff at our certified kitchen located at our Men’s Shelter with:
    • Breakfast helpers assist with prepping the meal, setting up the service area, serving of the meal if meal servers are not scheduled, and cleaning up.
    • Lunch helpers; prep, set up, serve, and clean up.
    • Dinner helpers; prep, set up, serve, and clean up as well as helping shut down kitchen which may include washing dishes and putting away tools & supplies.

Additional Requests / Commitment:

  • This volunteer opportunity can be for an individual or groups of up to four volunteers but we do ask for volunteers with a minimum age of 18 years old.
  • We ask volunteers to be a team player with a pleasant mind set and ability to work well with all types of individuals in a sometimes hot kitchen environment.
  • We are a qualified college certification program to sign off on community service hours and practicum hours for students seeking scholarships and graduation requirements.
  • We ask for a minimum 3 month commitment and while experience is preferred, it is not required.  We will show and teach you what you’ll be helping us to do.

Volunteer Opportunity #2: Meal Servers

Schedule:

  • Breakfast shift, Mon Thru Sun, 6:30 a.m. – 8:00 a.m.
  • Lunch Shift, Mon, Thru Sun, 11:30 a.m. – 1:00 p.m.
  • Dinner Shift, Mon thru Sun,
    • Men’s shelter; 5:30 p.m. – 7:00 p.m.
    • Women’s shelter; 5:15 p.m. – 6:45 p.m.
    • Hale Mauliola; 5:30 p.m. to 6:00 p.m.

Locations:

Volunteer’s role:

  • Assist the IHS’ kitchen staff at our shelters with setting up the meal service area, serving the meal to our guests, and clean up of the service area and dining room after the meal service is completed.

Additional Requests / Commitment:

  • This volunteer opportunity can be for an individual or group of up to a maximum of eight volunteers at each shelter.
  • We do ask for volunteers with a minimum age of 15 years old be accompanied by an adult legal guardian or parent.
  • We ask volunteers to be a team player with a pleasant mind set and ability to work well with all types of individuals and the homeless in an emergency shelter environment.
  • We are a qualified college certification program to sign off on community service hours and practicum hours for students seeking scholarships and graduation requirements.

Volunteer Opportunity #3: Meal Program Coordinator

Schedule:

  • Tue, Wed, & Thu, 9:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m.

Location:

Volunteer’s role:

  • Assist the IHS’ Meals Program Manager with administrative support, including data entry into Excel, copying, filing, and general office support.  Volunteers also assist with scheduling volunteer groups, ordering food, and pick up scheduling when needed.

Additional Requests / Commitment:

  • We ask for computer experience with excel and access proficiency preferred.
  • We are a qualified college certification program to sign off on community service hours and practicum hours for students seeking scholarships and graduation requirements including high school and college senior projects.
  • We ask volunteers to be a team player with a pleasant mind set and ability to work well various individuals.
