Urban Agriculture - Taking Root

We are seeking volunteers to assist with our Taking Root Job Skills Training Program as well as the overall care of our Rooftop Aquaponics and Hydroponics Garden.


Volunteer Opportunity #1: Leading Taking Root Classes

Schedule:

  • Mon, Wed, & Fri, 9:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.

Volunteer’s role:

  • Assist the Agricultural Specialist with teaching our adult agricultural training courses as well as setting up and leading activities that support the learning’s of the class.  This includes leading the class through topics covering plants, irrigation, soil and compost, Integrated Pest Management (IPM), Aquaponics and Hydroponics.

Additional Requests / Commitment:

  • We ask volunteers have a level of patience and understanding as well as the ability to work well with all types of individuals.
  • We are a qualified college certification program to sign off on community service hours and practicum hours for students seeking scholarships and graduation requirements.
  • We ask for your Kokua in helping our homeless clients feel welcomed and provide them with a meaningful learning experience they will value the rest of their lives.


Volunteer Opportunity #2: Garden Operators

Schedule:

  • Mon, Wed, & Fri, 1:00 p.m. – 5:00 p.m.
  • Tue & Thu, 9:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. and / or 1:00 p.m. – 5:00 p.m.

Volunteer’s role:

  • Assist the Agricultural Specialist with maintain our roof top Aquaponics and Hydroponics gardens.  This includes various activities like harvesting leaf vegetables and koi/tilapia, washing net pots and plant beds, planting seedlings, transplanting, fertilizing, pressure washing media cinder, and feeding fish.

Additional Requests / Commitment:

  • We ask volunteers to fulfill at least a three month commitment which will benefit our guests and clients.
  • We want volunteers to be able to work in an outdoor environment subject to the weather alongside other volunteers, IHS staff and guests with a positive mindset.
  • We are a qualified college certification program to sign off on community service hours and practicum hours for students seeking scholarships and graduation requirements.


Volunteer Opportunity #3: Landscape Volunteers

Schedule:

  • Mon, Wed, & Fri, 1:00 p.m. – 5:00 p.m.
  • Tue & Thu, 9:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. and / or 1:00 p.m. – 5:00 p.m.
  • Sat 9:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. and / or 1:00 p.m. – 5:00 p.m. (for groups with a maximum size of 20)

Volunteer’s role:

  • Assist the Agricultural Specialist with maintaining two of our shelters campuses; Women’s & Family Shelter and Hale Mauliola.  This includes weeding, trimming, pruning, and maintaining our plants and trees.
  • Occasionally harvest papaya and other fruit trees.  Possible creative landscaping design work based on expertise and how long the volunteer can contribute to the project.

Additional Requests / Commitment:

  • This volunteer opportunity can be for an individual or group as large as 20 volunteers.
  • We want volunteers to be able to work in an outdoor environment subject to the weather alongside other volunteers, IHS staff and guests.
  • We are a qualified college certification program to sign off on community service hours and practicum hours for students seeking scholarships and graduation requirements.
